![]() ![]() Indeed, William’s opinion is that it was mainly due to the enormous impact of Jonas’s influential work that the view of the so-called Gnostic “protest exegesis” dominated the study of ancient Gnosticism in the second half of the twentieth century. ![]() Readers of Michael Williams’s Rethinking Gnosticism will surely trace this analysis back to Hans Jonas’s The Gnostic Religion. 2 Such an understanding of ancient Gnosticism presents Gnostics as anarchists avant la lettre, as rebels who romantically rejected the yoke of a life of alienation, governed by suffering and limited by death. 1 It has been considered as inverting ancient patterns of knowledge transmission, rejecting the standard cultural values of ancient society, representing a protest exegesis, and rejecting ancient philosophy or else upsetting contemporary ethics. Depending on the scholar, Gnostic revolt has been seen as directed towards either world rulers in general, or Judaism and the God of the Old Testament in particular. Modern receptions of ancient Gnosticism tend to highlight Gnostic non-conformism, especially admiring the alleged gnostic freedom of mind, and revolt against standard values and norms. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The heroine, Gretchen, is a writer who makes her living (such as it is) as a ghostwriter for a pulpy series of “astronaut fucks his way across the universe.” Hunter sees her with her BFF (who is engaged to his BFF) and becomes obsessed with this hot redhead who said that she was more interested in a guy’s brain than his looks. Our hero is Hunter, who was horribly scarred physically and emotionally during his childhood, and is, as all good beasts should be, ridonkulously rich and lives all by himself in a mansion with three kitchens. ![]() This is a contemporary, which is not my favorite genre, but it had elements I liked. Please, god, let me not find any more pairs with names that are some variation on Christine and Erik, because REALLY. I realized that I was working my way through the various Beauty and the Beast inspired books anyway, so I decided to stop doing it accidently and just review Every. ![]() ![]() What makes Sidekicks so effective is that it acts as a celebration of the original Avengers line-up, and what they once stood for. ![]() Jim Cheung’s precise lines are brought to life by Justin Ponsor’s incredible colours this is indeed a pretty book. The dialogue is snappy and natural without faltering from its purpose, and the team’s first bungled rescue attempt has a hearty, Mystery Men appeal to it. The Patriot, clad in a costume resembling Bucky’s, is the grandson of Isaiah Bradley, the original Captain America, and resents Steve Rogers for the ‘successful white’ version he is. But Heinberg ( Grey’s Anatomy, The O.C.) gives them enough flavour to be distinct and worthwhile characters in their own right. The new hopefuls are of course unashamed facelifts of Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and Hulk. ![]() When the team are dubbed by the press as ‘Young Avengers,’ Captain America and Iron Man are understandably unimpressed that their likenesses are being exploited by four inexperienced teens: Patriot, Asgardian, Iron Lad and Hulking. With the demoralised team disbanded, a damaged Vision initiates a contingency plan to recruit new members in the event of an eventual crisis. Sidekicks directly follows the events of Avengers Disassembled, in which a traumatised Scarlet Witch lost control of her powers, killing Hawkeye, Ant-Man and, seemingly, Vision in the process. ![]()

Tessa bailey christmas7/4/2023 ![]() Stella is wrestling not only with the disorientation of returning to life on the outside, but also with the way she got herself there in the first place. The only problem? Stella’s recently been released from prison, where she’d served time for a felony she most definitely committed. Stella Schmidt finds herself stalled outside a department store on New York’s 5th Avenue, hypnotized by the sheer wrongness of the holiday window display: who on earth thought to put mechanical penguins at a luxury department store? The man who notices her reaction turns out to be Aiden Cook, store owner, who pushes her to apply to design the replacement windows. While it’s not the best example of Bailey’s spicy style, it’s a welcome addition to the generally low-sensuality Christmas subgenre, and it’s nice to see a heroine in need of redemption instead of the hero. ![]() Window Shopping is a sexy holiday romance that will most definitely put the jingle in your bells. ![]()
